Description
This was out during my kindergarten year in 1972-73. It may have been a product of General Mills, but don't quote me. It was, however, a cocoa version of cheerios, having the exact same shape but dark brown in color. There was a low-budget style drawing of a bespectacled owl on the cereal box and he was also the spokes character on the commercials for the cereal. An added bonus was the inclusion of traffic sign stickers free inside each box. This cereal was a favorite of mine at the time, but alas, was discontinued by my first grade year.

NO one I have ever asked has remembered this cereal. But I recall seeing the commercial on TV and asking my mother to get some for me next time she went shopping. She came back empty-handed, saying she couldn't find it. Never did. Apparently, the stores in our area (NC) never got the stuff. I still sometimes think of Cocoa Hoots when I'm browsing the cereal section, and wonder if it was as good as I imagined it would be!

I remember this cereal because I got in trouble. I ate the whole box in one day, cereal, that is, not the box:) And I do remember the stickers as I used to paste them all over my schoolbooks because the books had to be covered with brown paper bags to protect them. 1970's bookcovers.

LOVED Hoots! All that chocolatey goodness. Had the sticker plastered all over, on my bedroom door, schoolbooks, and on the pipe in the basement...and they lasted on the door and pipe until I moved out in 2002. But back to the cereal, I loved it!

Newton was the owl's name on Cocoa Hoots by Kelloggs. There were twelve Safety Sign stickers in all, reflecting a transition from words to pictures, which how traffic signs were designed. Hoots was very good, but not a big seller, having only been around two years. It was sort of a cross between Cocoa Krispies and Cheerios.
