Description
Waffle-stamped potato chips in a red(?) box, their ad campaign centered on how they were less greasy than regular bag chips and would show the results of the "Napkin Blot Test" to illustrate. Great potatoey snacks, Munchos is the closest thing to compare them to now. Wish these were still around!

My parents are always saying, "See you around like a Chippo." They said the chips were kind of like a pretzel or something, but can't remember who made them - does anyone know?

Out of all the 70's foods, I miss Chippo's the most! Pringles had nothing on them!!

Muncho's are not a bad substitute. But I will always remember Chippo's. Sitting around the family room with my mom sharing a box watching tv. Ah youth...

From what I can remember about Chippo's, they were made by either Betty Crocker (I'm thinking I remember seeing the red spoon ), or General Mills.

I miss Chippo's too! I remember going to Granny's house where she would keep them in a plastic container in her pantry. YUM! I still crave them to this day!

I loved Chippo's too! The closest product I have found is Muncho's by Frito Lay.
Tina - October 05, 2009 - Report this comment
I loved them two. Pringles are close, but just not quite right. Munchos has the texture, but the flavor is no where near close to Chippos. Aside from a different texture, which was part of the appeal of Chippos, Tato Skins (unflavored) is almost the exact flavor of Chippos.

Thank God I found you guys, I was starting to think I made up Chippo's! No one in my family remembers them but me, and I loved them. Dipped in Lipton Onion Dip, they were awesome.

MAN! Loved these! That red box seemed to be present at every social gathering in the 70's! So cool that they're remembered with such waffley potato love. Now off to search the internet for a WayBack Machine so I can go get me some Chippo's, an eight-pack of Frostie Root Beer and a giant Chocolite candy bar. Yeah, I know, but a person can dream, right?

I remember when I was a kid I'd spend my own pocket money on box of chippos, and then work my way through the entire box while reading Sherlock Holmes. I live in England now, and though they don't have the same shape at all, there's a reconstituted potato snack called 'hula hoops' that brought waves of Chippo memories flooding back. If it only it could bring back Chippos too.
Deb Withers - November 10, 2009 - Report this comment
Chippos were my favorite food in the 70's. A must have for sleep overs. They were the best chips, and I was beginning to think that I was the only one who remembered them.

I loved Chippos. Does anyone still make them anymore? I loved the cartoon illustration on the back of the box that showed how the chips were made.
Debbie Mitchell - January 20, 2010 - Report this comment
I am still craving Chippos. I could eat a whole box. Wish Betty Crocker would bring them back. They just melted in your mouth. Munchos and Pringles are close but no cigar! The Willy Wonka Scrunch bar was my favorite candy bar. Oh to have a Scrunch bar and a box of Chippos!!!!!! Maybe when I get to heaven.

Yes, Yes, I also remember and loved Chippos. They were from Betty Crocker and were hyped as being "less greasy than regular chips". I remember them well from 8th grade. They were the best !!

I remembered that they tasted great, came in a foil bag, and they were 'flash fried'?

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one that remembers these! No one from my childhood remembers them, except my mom. They were so unique, and I just have a feeling they may come back again, for all us retro food lovers! Then if they bring back Freakies cereal, & Chocolate Koogle, I will be in oblivion... . . :)
Bill - April 02, 2010 - Report this comment
Miss them, too. Would have sworn they were spelled with only one P. Chipos. Guess not. I think Lays STAX are the closest thing to Chippos. Both Chippos and STAX are baked; Munchos are fried, I believe.
Bill - April 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Here's a picture of an old box. I was right about the spelling -- only one P. But I was wrong about them being baked. They were "flash fried." http://www.flickr.com/photos/mankatt/3502498639/in/set-72157603919752068/

I have been looking online for years for anyone who remembered Chipos. My mom is the only one besides me who remembers them. They were my favorite too! I too remember looking at the back of the box - I think there was a cartoon illustration of the chips being made and a conveyor belt? I wish they still made these. =(

They were in a yellow/orange box and were sooo delicious. The taste was similar to the original pringles, but with a waffle cut.

I LOVED THEM! Nothing was ever quite like them. I loved the aroma, I loved how they were weird shaped, some folded, so you could get a good mouthful. I am so glad there is a page here dedicated to them!! I'm not sure I'd want them back, it'd be hard not to eat the whole box! :p

I don't recall whether it was during its introduction, but I became aware of Chippos because they offered a double-your-money-back guarantee. I was an enterprising lad, so I bought a box and sent in a request for a refund. They made good on their promise. Don't judge - it's a sickness ... I was even driven to tickle the feet of my disgusting sisters for a nickel. Still, I DID feel guilty, because they were so delicious. Maybe it was a bunch of like-minded punks that did them in…

Chipos were the best! Much better than Pringles and Munchos is nothing but a cheap, low quality imitation of Chipos...Why they do not make them today, I will never understand.

I cant believe all you people remember Chippos too I thought I was the only one. I have never liked regular potato chips. CHIPPOs were awesom. All I ever ate were those and Munchos. I also remember Munchos left for awhile too then came Pringles. It was so sad not being able eat those delightful salty treats from the foil box. Much to our surprise when then they brought back Munchos but no Chippos. :( Pringles tastes like cardboard. Still remember lunchtime at school me, my sandwich, my little lunch bag (they didnt have ziplock bags back then only the twists ties) of chippos or munchos and carton of chocolate milk. AHHHH Memories!!!!!!

CHIPPOS!!! I grew up in Upstate NY, and remember those. The wacky ads, sliced potatos on a conveyer belt traveling thru some oven gismo with the classic Tesla "V" shaped electric ladder with arcs of electricity rising and cracking. Yes, they were the worlds least greasy chip, and beat Pringles "hands down". I moved to Cali in the middle of the 70's, and they never made it out there.

It appears that Kellog has plans to buy Pringles, so now is the time to ralley General Mills to reintroduce the Chippos. . .They can make them with Sea Salt or something to make them more special

I really miss Chippos too. I loved to chew up 3 or 4 at the same time and they would kind of revert back to their granular potato like texture--no matter how much you chewed them. Their texture and the "screen door" or waffle pattern made them different from everything else. I have to agree with Bill about Stax being the closest for me too. Probably because they are thicker than Pringles and don't have the fried/bubbled texture of Munchos. All good but Chippos were the best.

Loved Chippos, my aunt introduces me to them in 1970, or 1971. Lived in Tonawanda NY and they were sold at Bells Market. They were the best and did compete with Munchos. Wish they would come back. Saw the Charlies potato chips are being made again and sold in metal tin.

Yep - I'm another child of the CHIPOS age...at 45 I still wish I could have them again as they are on my taste bud's memory --- Pringles are NOT the same. And to the one above who mentioned FROSTIE root beer --- we are obviously of the same cloth! :-)

Chipos ( spelled with only one p) are one of the things I thoroughly enjoyed in the early 70's. They were wonderful and it is quite sad the product was allowed to fade from the American marketplace. As for who made them, they were a General Mills product. Part of the confusion of their branding is that the Betty Crocker line is a General Mills created brand as well and the Chipos boxes featured the same point coupons used by BC products. I recall two packages and here are links as of today to packages for all those wanting a nostalgic moment to their younger days. First this more colorful and more likely forgotten package: http://trade.mar.cx/US72300870 Second the one the most of us recall: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mankatt/3502498639/in/set-72157603919752068/ And lastly, this was the logo first used for them: http://trade.mar.cx/_images/US72106270 packages though no one has an actual package I can find using it. Maybe Betty's latest incarnation will see fit to start producing them again. Enjoy all. dat

My hubs just discovered my secret hankering for Chipos...when he bought me some Munchos. He got an earful about the memories I had as a child. I remember going to summer camp and getting boxes of Chipos as a prize. The whole box! It was nothing to get two boxes. Loved those and have tried to find a good substitute. Munchos are close...but they are NOT Chipos! I was cracking up that there actually was a site dedicated to the memory of childhood foods.

I remember eating Chipos in the mid-to-late seventies. The taste I remember most closely equates to Lays Stax chips even though the texture may be closer to Munchos. They were my favorite chip and I'd surely like to be eating some right now! Who knows, sometimes this stuff comes back. I wonder if they still have the recipe and still know how to flash fry?

My parents used to take us kids on a weekend drive from Montreal to Plattsburgh, NY in the early to mid 70s. We’d go to the Grand Union grocery store to buy many food and beverage products not sold in Canada, including Chipos. I loved those “new fashioned” potato chips. The waffle criss-cut texture made a real difference in the taste. I often ate half or even the whole box on the drive home. General Mills made other great boxed snacks back then including Pizza Spins.
