Description
A crispy center covered with chocolate. Made by Peter Paul, I think. Very good candy bar in the 60's and 70's.

I STIll long for this candy bar! It was my favorite of all time! I remember fighting my brother and sister for theirs when we would get candy at Halloween! LOL They knew how much I loved Caravelles and I usually had to trade 2 for 1, but I didn't care!! The $100 Thousand Dollar Bar just doesn't compare!!

My uncle handled the Peter paul candy account when I was growing up. One day he sat all of us kids down and gave us candy wrapped in a white wrapper. He told us it was a new candy and asked us to eat it, then tell him what it should be called. After alot of suggestions my cousin Tim blurted out "Caravelle!" Unfortunately the candy bar wasn't very successful.

Boy, did I love this candy bar. What ever happened to it? Mounds stayed around, why not Caravelle? What's the matter? Did people somehow stop loving a crispy center with carmel dipped in milk chocolate??

There is a long list of fond memories when I think about my all-time favorite candy bar the Caravelle. What are the chances of re-introducing one of the best tasting candy bars in history?

I just remembered the slogan "Indescribably Delicious" and it truly was! Steve Almond writes in "Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America",... "this entire book arose from the loss of a single candy bar. I am speaking of the Caravelle".

My piano teacher used to give me a Caravelle bar each week after my lesson. I looked forward to that so much, and was VERY disappointed if she gave me some other candy. The very best candy bar ever! What were those crunchy things in the bar that weren't crispy rice? Kind of like small nuts, but tasted so good!!!

Back in 1969 when I was a freshman in high school, at lunch I would get a seven-up soda (in a glass bottle back then) and drop Sweet-Tarts into it to make it fizz, and drink it along with about three Caravelle bars. (Back then I could eat anything and stay skinny.) That was my all-time favorite candy bar! Nothing else is quite the same.

Caravelle, that's it! I am in my mid-forties and when I was a kid I loved this candy bar. I could never remember the name of it though. Was so excited to find it here - been more than 3 decades and I can still remember how it tasted!
kent - October 06, 2009 - Report this comment
this was a very popular but had ground brazil nuts and it went bad quickly. it sold fast enough that wasn't much of a problem but when the price of the nuts jumped it spelled doom for this great candy.
janet - October 29, 2009 - Report this comment
When I was in college the Caravelle bar was sold in the vending machine in the basement of the dorm. It is beyond the best tasting candy bar in the world. Every now and then I think about it (even I can't believe I just said that). Whenever I mention it to anyone, they have no memory of it. The $100,000 bar is close but in no way matches the Caravelle bar.

I am so glad I saw this site. I was beginning to think I had dreamed up the taste of this candy bar. No one else ever remembers it when I bring it up. As you can see, I'm almost obsessed.

I remember the day it was announced on the news that Peter Paul was going to stop making my favorite candy bar, Caravelle. How I wish Cadbury would see fit to bring this 'indescribably delicious' candy bar back!

My best friend and I would walk barefoot to the neighborhood five and dime store several times a week for Caravelle bars. Now they wouldn't let you in a store barefoot! Good memories, great candy bar.

Several times a week we would go to the YWCA for a "plunge" and I would always get a Caravelle bar from the vending machine. I made sure I always had enough money on me to buy one. I savored every bite. I can taste it like it was yesterday. It was a fabulous candy bar and I also miss it. Someone needs to resurrect this delicious treat so it can be enjoyed by new generations, and delight those of us that loved them and were fortunate enough to have had them.

Caravelle, my all-time favorite. The wrapper was aqua and white, as I recall. Like someone else said, this was the only thing I ever shoplifted; I was only 6 years old and in Catholic School, so that shows you the spell this candy had over me! I still dream about Caravelle bars.......

Just remembering while eating a chocolate, caravelle bars, probably the best candy bar I have ever had. The closest was the 1000 bar but it is missing some little piece of buttery salty thing that was in the middle and the caramel was better in the caravelle.

My 2 favorites growing up were Beich's banana carmels and Caravelle! Ever since, I've searched everywhere with no luck. Even oldtimecandy.com could only offer the $100,000 bar, even though they have almost everything else! I gues it's another example of the saying 'you can't take it with you'!! Caravelle is dead ... long live Caravelle!!!! One last word: YUM.

I will never forget this candy bar, but my memories of it are not fond. I ate one during lunch when I was in elementary school in the early 70's. I broke out in hives and by the time my mon picked me up I as so swollen, I had to be rushed me to the hospital with a severe allergic reaction. The ingrediants on that one indeed listed Brazil nuts, the only nut I am allergic to. I too saw the wrapper online which did not list Brazil nuts, so it must have changed.

I too loved the Caravelle candy bar! the carmel in the middle was soft and buttery! 100 grand does not compare! My all time fav candy bar was the Butternut candy bar. Please everyone email Hershey candy company as they own the rights to the Caravelle and the Butternut candy bar. They could introduce a whole "nostaglia" thing. It might be fun for everyone....no doubt it would be YUMMY!

I never forgot Caravelle candy bars. But many people my age don't remember it. To the point that I actually thought I dreamed it up like someone else mentioned earlier. Glad I found you guys here. It was my favorite candy bar forever. I was under the false impression that they sold the formula to the makers of the 100 Grand bar because it was so close but no cigar. I'd love to see Peter Paul bring it back

The Caravelle was introduced in the Sixties about the time I was in junior high. As previous encomia attest, once tasted, never forgot. Ma mere used to buy by the box. Caravelle was introduced in 1966. Like many confectioners, Peter Paul made the mistake of not promoting it as much as it had with Mounds and Almond Joy, the flagship products (similar case: Fleer promoting Dubble Bubble instead of Chum Gum). Caravelle got more ad time (or space) around 1972 and '73, after Peter Paul did some overhauling to its entire lineup of products. Then, promotion sank when sales sank after 1975. The Nestle $100,000 Bar fared much better as a similar product. Peter Paul abandoned Caravelle around 1977.

Caravelle was my older sister's only vice when it came to candy in our teen years. She actually kept one next to her bed; she figured if she could resist the temptation of her favorite candy, she could resist anything that could make her fat. It must have worked; she had a great slim figure

I never leave comments on random sites like this but I found this site because an article made me think of going to camp in the 70s, and one of my memories of camp was buying a Caravelle bar at the camp snack shack every afternoon! By that time of the afternoon I would be hot and tired from canoeing or playing in the creek or hiking up and down, and I would wait in the long line in the hot sun to get a Dr. Pepper and Caravelle, then lay in the dusty grass with my friends, or sit with our feet in the creek, and eat it. Soooo good! I was never able to find them anywhere else. There is a Caravelle commercial on YouTube that starts with a kid laying in the grass and thinking of Caravelle. Makes me smile. :)

My family used to race dragsters back in the day of this candy bar, and some friends of ours had a funny car that was sponsored by Peter Paul. After their car would make a run their crew would follow to retrieve it and they would toss hundreds of the little Halloween-sized bars from the back of their push truck into the crowd as they passed. One of the bars they always had on hand was the Caravelle.. so I would always make an excuse to stop by their pit so I could snatch up a few handfuls of those little gems. By far the best candy bar I have ever tasted and I miss it to this day.

I was a figure skater during the 1970's and I would sometimes get stage fright in front of large crowds, so my coach suggested to have a favorite taste lingering in my mouth when I took the ice to calm my nerves, and I would take a little nibble on a Caravelle bar. I don't think it ever helped with the stage fright--lol--but I sure did like the flavor and I came here to see if it is still available. I'm sorry to see that it isn't :-(

I loved the Caravelle bar. I remember the days when the candy bars were one piece, one long piece. They only cost a nickle. Then they went to a two piece bar which was less candy and the prices kept going up. What gives. Also remember Hostess cupcakes were 19 cents. The good old days.

Caravelle candy bars were my favorite candy of all time. I have often thought about them over the years and wished that they still existed. Now I’m not sure why they stopped making them, I do know that I had bought one and I broke it open and there were little white worms in them. It wasn’t too long after that, that I noticed they were removed from the shelves. I was so disappointed.

From the daytime TV vault, a Caravelle commercial geared toward adults. In a car, a man, posing as the son of Peter Pau's president with a woman named Bernadette, pulls up in front of the factory and brags about it. Bernadette only wants candy. This aired on "Dark Shadows" over ABC (9/22/69). A second commercial, trying to lure the kid and teen dollar, featured mixed, psychedelic animation with live action kids (in hippie duds), and a tuneful jingle. This aired on "Bullwinkle" over ABC (9/27/70), a Sunday morning show.

From the daytime TV vault, a commercial with a guy and gal at the movies. At the candy counter, gal wants Caravelle, but guy sees a cheaper candy bar. You guessed it: Guy caves and buys her the Caravelle. This aired on "It's Happening" over ABC (10/2/68). A Dick Clark program, structured like the Saturday "Happening '68," but with Paul Revere (Raiders) as solo host. A mix of music, celebrity talk and comedy. Show was five days a week, a 13-week trial run. In this episode, Revere's guests were Nancy Aames (singer on "That Was The Week That Was") and bubblegum group Professor Morrison's Lollipop, led by Joey Levine, who simultaneously led Ohio Express. Gilette, Clairol and Dr. Pepper also sponsored. Network promos for "Here Come the Brides" and "Dark Shadows."

I thinkyou are all correct. I was crazy about this bar when it first came out. My memory was that it was surrounded by nuts. Brazil nuts would make sense because it had a unique rich taste and was extra crunchy and very solid to hold. I stopped eating them when they changed the nuts to crisped rice. It was an obvious change and became lighter weight. That is my memory.

From the Saturday daytime TV vault, Peter Paul was a sponsor during this episode of "Happening '69" on ABC (3/29/69) with Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay of the Raiders. The commercial highlights Mounds and Almond Joy, but Caravelle is subliminally mentioned in picture. After a lengthy gap due to college football and basketball games pre-empting the show, "Happening" returned to hold the finals in its long-awaited Battle of the Bands contest, with the winning band getting ten grand (peanuts today) worth of prizes Regis Philbin and Casey Kasem among the judges. The Raiders lip-sync "Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon." Benwitt (British imported shoes), Cover Girl, Heinz ketchup and pickles among other sponsors. Dick Clark produced.

From the daytime TV vault, an early commercial for Caravelle ("New From Peter Paul")The voice announcer sounds like Larry Blyden. A beautiful woman and geeky guy are shown. Girl threatens to leave unless he gives her Caravelle. This aired during the teen-oriented soap opera, "Never Too Young," on ABC (#/3/66). Breeze laundry soap, Oscar Mayer cold cuts, Wish Bone dressing and Alka Seltzer also sponsored. Several network promos include "The Fugitive' " Also, "Where the Action Is" with Dick Clark and "12 O'clock High" with Paul Burke. While many soaps are reputed as dull, slow moving and over-dramatic, "Never Too Young" was an exception. It was lively, with fast-paced subplots. Rock N Roll music was implemented in many episodes. Tony Dow did his best to make his character more hip than Wally Cleaver. While the main premise was boys, girls and surfboards, the Malibu Beach setting and the teen hangout, Alfy's High Dive, quite appropriate. Alfy, the British owner in his twenties, had the liability of being attractive to the teenage girls. Close to 200 episodes were taped in glorious black & white. Show lasted nine months, replaced by "Dark Shadows" in June, 1966. _
