We used to wear them with jean shorts and Converse ... the shoes had to be Converse!
These were so standard during the 70s that we didn't even have a special name for them. I still prefer to feel socks squeezing my calves all the way to the knee.
I had a several pairs in red, blue, green, and black stripes. I can't recall what brand of shoes I wore though. I seem to recall wearing non-brand name shoes because my parents couldn't afford expensive shoes. I did have a pair of Nike Cortez sneakers around '79. I wish I still had them because my feet haven't grown since 8th grade.
My entire gym class in junior high was a sea of tube socks!
