I remember these pants were the coolest. The ones we had were low waisted with three snaps and only back pockets and bell bottoms.

im from new orleans, and i remember most of the girls in the early 70's wore peanut jeans. they looked great on them. i think peanut jeans may have had a lower rise than todays jeans?

Loved these jeans - had a bunch of colors - used to buy them at the head shop in Morristown. Wish I still had them for my girls!!

Yes! Merry Go Round in Maryland!!!! I wore them all the time!
Susan - July 20, 2011 - Report this comment
Yeah! It seems like Maryland was the Peanuts capital of the world. We did get them at Merry-Go-Round and Hip Pocket, but mostly from Slack Shack in the iffy part of Laurel where they had HUNDREDS of them in every color. They must not have been very well made because they seem to have vanished from the face of the earth...noone can find them on Ebay or in thrift stores.
Susan - July 20, 2011 - Report this comment
I forgot to mention Peanuts *shorts*...omg. Everyone's mom HATED them, they were so low and so short...lol. If you were going to a Peter Frampton concert in junior high, you were gonna wear 'em!
Denise T. - August 04, 2011 - Report this comment
I loved the peanuts jeans. They had so many colors. I think I had them all. I bought them all at slack shack in Lebanon, PA.They were very low cut, real short zippers on some and others had like 3 snaps. I wish I still had them. You can't find them any where and this is just my opinion but they were the coolest jeans ever.

I use to buy Peanut Pants at the Jean Jack in Georgetown Alley at the Laurel, Md shopping center. I can not find any info on these pants...they were made by a company called Viceroy. I did find a company in Australia called Sterling & Viceroy, they have a Facebook page...I asked them on FB if they were the company that made Peanut Pants, maybe I'll get an answer Here is their email. http://www.sterlingandviceroy.com.au

Tonight I saw a pair of vintage Viceroy jeans ( not Peanuts) on Etsy.com where the seller has a good picture of the Viceroy company logo. I wish I could upload the logo here, but I can't. It is the same exact logo that Viceroy imprinted on the 3 snaps of their Peanut pants; a small letter S nestled inside the letter V. I too am from Maryland and can say that Peanuts were HUGE in the Silver Spring area in 1972/ 1973. I remember going to Mel's Other Place in the Kemp Mill Shopping center in Wheaton, or The Solar Plexus in Silver Spring. Peanuts by Viceroy came in so many different colors and even corduroy or velveteen. Of course, my mom hated them and made me wear bodysuits and warned that they would damage my figure....??? What could have happened to make them totally disappear? The only thing that I can think of is to try and research government patents for the brand name Viceroy if they were, in fact, an American company. Finding out what happened to Peanut pants is driving me bonkers. Somebody has to know something.
Lisa - September 30, 2012 - Report this comment
Exciting news!!!Checking patents turned out to be a good idea! This url:http://174.36.140.236/vs-73150250.html shows the patented Viceroy logo of the V and S I mentioned above that was printed on the snaps. The V/S stands for Viceroy Sportswear. According to the patent site, the patent "died" in 1977. The address of Viceroy Sportswear was New York! There is an address that would be a long shot to mail an inquiry too after 35 years, but I just might do it. Anybody live in New York?

OMG! I thought I was the only one that remembered Peanuts! Never have found anyone until this page. I bought mine somewhere in the Hinsdale, IL area, but moved back to my home state of MD after graduation and people were wearing them all around the Gaithersburg area! This is so cool to finally find other people that remember them. Such a shame they aren't around now, cause they would surely fly off the shelves! Thank you all for the walk down memory land! :)

What is so hard to believe is that there isn't one single photo or vintage ad anywhere to be found online. I can find pictures of old perfume bottles from the 1950's, yet not one photo of somebody wearing peanut pants. Remember the glossy paper tag that used to come on new peanuts? It was a girl's topless midriff in only the jeans.

I have been searching for a picture of peanut jeans and can't find one anywhere either. Grew up in a subberb of New Oleans and got mine from a dept store called Maison Blanche. The one on the westbank had an annex and that is where I found mine. We wore it with the popcorn shirt that snapped in the crotch.

I was not the prettiest or smartest or most popular in the 70's...but when I wore them peanuts jeans, guys would take notice! Yes they had 3 snaps and I had a variety of colors in cord. Got them at The SUPRISE STORE in Somerville, NJ. My best friends lil sis borrowed them all the time!
FL Girl - June 21, 2013 - Report this comment
I remember them for having a three inch zipper. I grew up in Daytona Beach and Orlando, they were only in the "surf" or "head" shops. I also remember whe the Rat's Hole was a hole, corner shop on the beach. I bought leather strips to braid for headbands and bracelets. You wait long enough and trends circle around.

I did a search for peanuts pants after seeing someone I knew from 5th grade (1970-71) in an online photo wearing them, and found this page. Or at least it looks like her. Unfortunately, it's a photo taken by serial killer Rodney Alcala. http://www.cbsnews.com/2300-504083_162-10006434-55.html So I actually hope it's not her. We lived in Bethesda, MD where peanuts were really popular, but I lost touch with her after elementary school. I remember how excited I was to get my first pair - pink. Yes, they were really low hip huggers and had 3 snaps, and the moms hated them!

The Jean Jack in Laurel, MD was where I got mine. I wore the real low ones with shrink tops. I had a sexy midriff and beautiful hips.

I bought my 3 snap peanut jeans at the Wilson Men's Store in Seven Corners (Falls Church, VA). My dad hated them, nearly as much as he hated my mini-skirts and short-shorts (hot pants, but we weren't allowed to call them that, lol!).

Yep, loved these pants! I've looked for them on websites everywhere and they are nowhere to be found...I had dusty pink ones, bought at the Merry-Go-round, Park City Mall, Lancaster, PA. I wore body suits with them or halter tops and my mom haaated them! They were the epitome of cool back in the day. They disappeared from my closet one day (thanks to my mom).

I grew up in Gentilly & St. Bernard and remember peanut jeans well. Always wore with a double knit or the bubble body suit. I used to get mine from Levine's in Village Square in Chalmette. It was funny to see guys in them as their package was huge in them! ha!

I loved these jeans. In Northern VA, where I grew up, we used to get them at Merry Go Round and at Tip Top Ties. And yes, we used to hem up the seams to make them skin tight, and sew them up again when they ripped. But if they were too long, we just walked on them that way.

I grew up in New Jersey and wore Peanuts jeans all the time. We would buy them at either Psychedelics of Googleplex, the 2 hippy stores in town. My favorite pair was sky blue brushed denim. No pics of them to be found online...makes me sad.

I loved them, bought them at a store in Rockville?? called My Brother's Place. Wore mine with huge platform clogs, blue of course. Or my Earth shoes!!
Lisa - September 03, 2015 - Report this comment
I wore Earth shoes too! After that, suede Indian moccasins with ankle fringe that tied in front without soles. The bottoms would get slippery after a while and I would "skate" up and down the halls.

Yup! I wore nothing but Viceroy jeans in high school circa 1973. Lived in No. Virginia near DC, and had them in every color. Very low rise, 3 snaps. We wore them with Danskins leotards or skimpy halter tops. I bought mine at Merry Go Round at Tyson's Corners or the Springfield Mall. I wore them with clogs or big platform shoes.

I got my peanuts pants at Slack Shack in Pottstown PA. Three snaps, bells and worn with a big wide leather belt. Those were the days!
Abby - February 13, 2016 - Report this comment
I either got my Peanuts at the Springfield Mall or Tyson's Corners. That's where you'd want to wear them while staring at the boys who found it uncomfortable to stare back. Talk about attention grabbers. The lines were particularly iconic of the times. Someone's gonna make a mint off that pattern. The Peanuts gang had nothing to do with the pants that I can recall, but licensing might be a problem, today.

I was a freshman at Ohio University when I bought my first pair of viceroy cords. They had three snaps and were bell bottoms. I had a really good body shape then, however my boyfriend hated them because too many other guys were looking at me wearing the pants. I found that quite funny...I never stopped wearing them. Wish I could find a pair now.
Richard - February 23, 2016 - Report this comment
Those insecure boyfriends; aren't they pathetic? My girlfriend wore those jeans with tiny little bare midriff tops everywhere, all the time. I loved it. Nothing looks better on a girl.

My mother forbade me to wear peanuts my first year in junior high. Oh how I cried and begged. My best friend gave me all her hand me downs when she got new ones… Denim, purple, can't remember but total six pair. Finally when I turn 13 my aunt convinced mom to buy me peanuts and also a pair of delicious mid rise white wide bell pants with a leather belt and several turtlenecks. Finally I was groovy.

I got my peanut at the JeanJack in Laurel MD - my mom made me wear them with a bodysuit at first since they were so low cut. I had desert boots on my feet except in the summer it was Dr Scholl's exercise sandals. I still wear patchouli...

Clearing out my mom's house in Miami and found a pair of my old 3 snap Peanuts. I got mine in Coconut Grove way back when. I tried looking them up on Ebay and can't believe there aren't any listed. After finding this site, I think I might just keep them, reading the comments bring back so many memories.

Wow. I loved them back in the day. I too have looked to find them just to have a pair to show my kids. What true hip huggers were. If you were too skinny they would fall off you. Got them from the Freedom Factory in Glen Burnie and I believe the Merry-Go-Round had them too.

I lived in Huntington on Long Island, New York and had a bunch of Peanut and Viceroy pants that were barely hip huggers with the three snaps. I was also trying to remember which company made the denim dresses with the snaps that could also be worn as what today would probably be called a duster.

My son just is bought my granddaughter a pair of 3 snap semi-low rise corduroy bellbottoms. I told him about Viceroy peanuts. I’ve been to this page before to reminisce with you all. My mom wouldn’t let me wear them at first but in 9th grade she let my best friend give me all her hand me downs. I had just lost my baby fat and oh boy was I happy! They’re coming back girls, yay for our grandchildren.

I am in my mid 60's still have mine! Viceroy, yellow. Live in MD, got at Merry Go Round. Cleaned my mother's house out and found them!! They are so low so you could show off your hip bones. Wore with Lees jean jacket, desert boots and no bra under shirt and bangle bracelets above elbow. Great look for patrolling head shops at the Boardwalk. I cannot believe I still have them, size XS. They are extra long, back then we wanted our pants to drag. Also expertly paired with peasant blouses and my P Coat I had. Groovy yellow.

ps: Merry Go Round Towson. Also, if you find yours.. do NOT sell them online, they are priceless. They were cool because no other pants were that low and somehow my mother let us wear them to school.

I got my Peanuts pants at Merry Go Round in Glen Burnie, MD. I had tie-dyed jeans, powder blue corduroy bell bottoms with a cuff and regular dark blue. Mine had the 3 snaps. So cool! Back then (early 70's) I was very thin. It was hard to find pants that fit without my mom having to alter them. Peanuts were the first pair of pants that fit me without alterations. I was so excited! Until I found this page, I thought I was the only person who remembered these pants. I bet they would fly off the shelves today!

This page really sums up what junior high girls were all about in the early to mid 70s! I got my Peanuts at Slack Shack & Jean Jack too, but it was a struggle as I was always tall - had to let down whatever tiny hem they had & only certain colors were long enough. Had the micro tiny shorts, too! I remember they were problematic at school because when you sat at a desk, your butt crack showed if you didn’t wear a bodysuit. They looked so cool, though - really showed off hip bones & midriff. No wonder hardly any survived; I remember they were very cheaply made & fell apart if you washed them too often. I always guessed they were made in India thus the Viceroy brand, but I have no idea if this is true.
Silver Spring Susan - April 17, 2024 - Report this comment
Just remembered the Peanuts brand tag that came on them originally had the photo suggesting the girl wearing them was topless, but then it changed to a cartoon drawing of a peanut. Maybe parents complained, or maybe Viceroy wanted to appear to be respectable enough to be sold in dept stores in addition to head shops! Anyone remember shopping at Up Against the Wall? That was my high school go to for all the coolest jeans. I remeber getting my only pair of Fioruccis there.

I had purple, brown corduroy and light wash blue Jean, all w/3 snaps. Perfect with halters, translucent popcorn bodysuits and wide belt. Had to get seamstress to take in thighs to be tight, bell hem had to be stepped on by clogs, Dr.Scholls or fry boots. Wide belt with grommets a must. Bought at Fox’s Den or Merry Go Round - sometimes Cherry’s. Oh how I miss weighing 103 lbs.
