Okay,I had the best "maxi"/"mini coat . It had a zipper so you could go either way! You could remove the bottom and make it shorter and put the bottom back on when you were wearing an ankle length"granny dress".

I had a great "midi-coat" in the 70's - blue plaid with gold buttons, trimmed in "fur" along the bottom and sleeves! I wish they would make them today - they were pretty cool.

The Maxi coat sometimes had a soft tie belt but usually had a high waisted (hard- plastic- covered with the material of the coat wide 2+" belt)with belt loops and a big buckle in front-- This actually accentuated the long length of the coat-- and it looked really cool with big high platform shoes and a mini skirt underneathe- when you walked a glimpse of leg would come out! Found two Archie comic books with stories about Midi and maxi coats from 1970. First, Archie and Reggie find themselves forced to wear Betty and Veronica's maxi coats when their clothes get stolen in gym class. Second, on a camping trip, Betty and veronica store food in their maxi coats, as they, Archie and Jughead get stranded when Archie's car breaks down. Funny!

A follow-up on my previous comment: I didn't see a category for Midi Dress, so I'll post this here. The cover gag from the Oct., 1970 issue of Archie's Jokes comic book has Betty and Veronica (both wearing midi dresses) confronting Archie with the question: "Whose Midi do you like better?" in a classic triangle scene. Going back to previous comments on maxi coats, the comic book stories usually began with the boys ridiculing the girls (especially when Betty trips with her foot suck inside coat), then getting into humbling situations where maxi coats actually solved their problems. When Principal Weatherbee sees the boys in maxi coats, he assumes it's another crazy teen fad!
