Description: In the early and mid 70's, growing up in Da Bronx, New York, all us girls wore Little Abner combat boots. These were not the regular combat boots that were the orange/tan color. These boots were purchased in Army Navy stores and came up over our ankles. They were leather and I believe some suede. They were a light to darkish brown color - two toned and laced up to the top. They were to die for!!!! You HAD to have a pair of these to wear with your jeans that had 100 patches on them. I have been looking all over for another pair or something similar and have yet to find them. I even checked E-bay. Thank you.

I grew up in Baldwin & I wore my Abners almost every day,I LOVED these boots & unfortunately I threw them away when I moved. I should have kept them but a so-called friend had ruined them, that's what you get for helping! Anyway here is info that I posted on another site a few yrs back: "In 2002 I was determined to find these boots (I wore them mostly every day back in high school) and received the following info: 'Yes, back in the early 80's we were owned by a shoe company called BATA out of Canada. You might want to try them.' This came from Weinbrenner Shoe Co. Also: "The Roofer style has to the best of my research never been manufactured in a women's size range or style. There might be another style you are thinking about." Try: Goldman Brothers, I believe in Hicksville, NY @ 516-931-0441 (this is where my trail ended since they only carried men's sizes starting at 6. A salesman @ a Army/Navy store in Huntington Village told me "forget about the 80's, in the 70's I sold thousands upon thousands!"

I wore these boots all through high school, except when I wore my beloved Frye boots. Definitely went with patched, frayed jeans and indian shirts, favorite concert tees, or old flannel shirts! And really long hair.

Grew up in the Bronx also, 241st, and bought lil abners in Mt vernon on 4th ave..if I rememeber correctly, they were roughly 12.99 in the Army & navy store..went to p.s 142 Sousa on Baychester then to Evander...we wore them with the big bells with the different colored pockets, bought them on White Plains Road, and a Lee Jacket...did the rest of the school shopping on Fordham Rd..wow..for 100 bucks you could have gotten a bunch of school clothes, now my kids kicks cost way more then that!! Any body remember Fred Brauns, the shoes with the slant toe?..we had to wait for X-Mas for those, as they were more money...glad I found this site, would be jumping for joy if I could find another pair of abners!!

Anyone go to Lehman in the 70's? All the girls in the Bronx rocked Lil' Abners. We wore them with Lee straight legs, a dungaree jacket and in the winter a hooded sweatshirt underneath. I used to get mine up on Castle Hill at an Army/Navy right near the El. I've been looking for a while for them with no luck. Wasn't it great being 'real' and comfortable? Great to have found this site - peace to all.

Hey everyone, I'm tossing in a link to the Cat brand's 'Marin' boot I just bought. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007H3TB76/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1 While these arent' exactly 100% Lil'Abners, they're the closest I've found and I'm really happy with them. On Zappo's they were $250.(insane!), but I bought them through Amazon for $142.(less guilt). I wound up ordering the Brown (sometimes called Chili)and I'm very happy with them. They fit and feel the same as I remember Lil' A's. If memory serves me correctly, Lil' A's were light brown suede with brown leather toe caps. These are leather with a smoother leather toe cap in the same shade. No biggie. In any case, they cost a whole lot more than back in the day, but happiness is priceless! If you scroll to the bottom of the link you'll see a pair in Tan from an external link. Those look more like the original one's we wore. In any case, rock on and I'll wish you all a Happy & Healthy New Year!

I always wore lil abner's till they literally fell apart, and yes they were sold at the army & navy surplus stores and they were cheap. I have found a page that sells them for $165 USD, I guess the high price is due to the sentimental value LOL. http://workingperson.com/footwear-1/mens-work-boots/6-inch-work-boots/thorogood-boots-roofer-heavy-duty-work-boots-633-1-34313.html

I loved these boots - I grew up in The Bronx, as well. I bought them at Joe's Army and Navy at 149th Street or Modell's in The Bronx. The coolest pair of boots ever!!! I wish they would make them again, I would definitely buy a pair (hint to Timberland - adding this boot to your brand will certainly increase your market segment with the over 50 group:-). I could see myself now sporting a pair with my Lee Easy Riders, an Italian mock neck turtle neck, and cardigan sweater.

Growing up in the 70's was the absolute greatest! The best music, concerts, just great times! we all had our lil Abners, wore them with our carpenter jeans, levis, lee jeans and somehow with the right top, you still looked really hot!! We all still talk about those boots! The best was putting the taps on the front and the horseshoes on the back heels so that the noise they made sounded so cool! To go back and experience those times just for a day, would love it!

I wore my li'l abners as light work boots in the late 70s -- so, so comfortable. I recently saw roofer boots that are almost identical, but cost $180. Instead, I bought skechers Enderlin boots for $65. I'm hoping they soften up, but they remind me a lot of my li'l abners (as they look like a cross between li'l abners and "desert" boots).
