They are called Gaucho pants (not Goucho) after the style of pants worn by Argentine cowboys - who are known as gauchos.

They made you look fat and dumpy. Nobody really looked good in them.

The pants to have in my junior high in the mid-70s, usually in corduroy or denim in cold weather and lighter canvases in warm weather. Sometimes so full they looked like skirts. Worn with cowlneck sweaters and Fry boots or Dingo boots in the winter, often with matching vests.

When I buy capris pants, I look for wide legs so they'll look like the gauchos I wore in the '70s! I scored a nice denim pair from 7forallmankind last year!

I agree with the gauchos' being denim or cords (in fall colors) for '76/'77. HUGE cowl necks (extra points for wearing a locket necklace inside), loafers with knee socks. I forgot about the vests with turtle necks. Ha ha.

I had a pair of brown suede hip huggers and still have them. Awesome!

Mine were hunter green, corduroy, with a matching vest. I wore them with knee-high boots and a silk shirt. I also had an Etienne Aigner jacket with matching shoes and purse.

I was in Grade 1 when Gauchos came out (we didn't use the "pants" part in primary school) - had a pair each in dark blue corduroy and dark brown corduroy. I was the envy of the playground because I could climb the monkey bars without having to put on shorts under my skirt; girls still wore skirts to school in '76/'77, but we couldn't run and climb without wearing shorts underneath so that the boys didn't see our underwear. And they DID look so good with the striped knee socks!
