When it was popular:
Description: Way before Brooke Shields made it popular to show off your butt in jeans, A. Smile Jeans were THE JEANS that gave any butt a good shape. There slogan had a donkey at the end, it said, Put A, Smile On Your (ASS) These jeans were the original Stove Pipe jeans, about 12 inches wide all the way down. The other cool thing about them were the flap pockets that went straight down right at the belt line and only about 4 fingers wide and 3 inches deep. There was no sewn outline to the pocket, they were hanging on the inside of the pants with just a rectangular flap (with the bottom coming more to a point)sewn on to cover the opening. There hasn't been a better fitting jean made since.

Bobby Univ. of Maryland, A friend's brother was friends with the co-founder so I regularly got A. Smile stuff back in the late 60s/early 70s. I still have an intact pair of the denim bell-bottoms in very good shape. Who knows, I might just part with them for the right price. :D

I worked for A. Smile for a few years, both in NYC and in Atlanta when a dozen of us got transferred down there. I'd give anything to be able to take a stroll again through the warehouse to pick out the "baggies" (the famous wide leg, high waisted style) in any color and at the employee discounted price. Damn those jeans made your butt look great!

I knew Stanley "Bucky" the Co founder from my college days! Two of my High School friends came down to Miami for spring break from the U of Cincinnati with him. 3 years later I was working for a large Textile firm in NYC and They didn't have the credit to buy fabrics from me. Things turned around for them and before yopu knew it They were on the cover of Menswear Magazine!

I had A Smiles in the heavy cotton, not jeans. Maroon, green, blue, tan and black. I also ad 3 pair of the flap pocket jeans. These pants gave you a total Moose Knuckle and made your butt look so good, it could make a blind man cry. I had them about 3 inches too long to cover my platform shoes. When the shoes went out, I took the pants all to a seamstress to have them cuffed. When "Disco Fashion" died, it went FAST. Straight legs were coming in. Then we got hit with the disgusting Dockers look for 20 years. f I were 60 and A Smile re-released a line of ORIGINAL pants, I would buy them, wear them and be buried n them. I LOVED A Smile Pants....

I worked at their warehouse for a few years. Great people and a lot of fun to work. I learned how to make patterns and went to work in other jean places so I could make my jeans fit like the A Smile ones did.

worked in Atlanta for A. Smile at the custom design shop early '70s, where rhinestone patterns were applied as piece work, manager there was Karen B. I was an Atlanta freak then and was too hip to keep that job. Made jeans for upscale like B. Altman, etc.
